While it may have not set a record breaking weekend in the United States, elsewhere ‘The Fate of the Furious’ was a money-making machine setting a global record in the process.
For its opening weekend globally, ‘The Fate of the Furious’ has made an incredible $532 million worldwide in just a matter of days, driving passed previous record holder ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ when it launched with $529 million back in December 2015.
Impressively, China was the biggest market (opening higher than the USA) with an incredible $190 million which is the biggest opening weekend ever in that country. It’ll be interesting to see if ‘Fate 8’ can reach, if not beat, ‘Furious 7’ ($390 million) which is currently the highest grossing Hollywood film release in China.
In the United States, while it was originally reported to have opened with $100 million, it was adjusted down to a $98.8 million launch, which is the second highest for the franchise in the USA, below ‘Furious 7’ ($147 million).
