The tale as old as time has reached a new milestone.

The live-action adaptation of the 1991 animated classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ has now grossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the 29th film in history to do so (26th when re-releases are excluded).

It’s the first film this year to reach the billion dollar mark, and is Disney’s 14th billion dollar film at the global box office, more than any other studio in history, and by a wide margin. Warner Bros. and Universal have the next biggest billion dollar hits with 4 films each.

Additionally, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ becomes Disney’s second live-action film to be based off their animated classics to join the billion dollar club. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ was the first when it joined the billion dollar club back in 2010.

More impressively, it is the second musical film to gross more than $1 billion (‘Frozen’ was the first), and marks the first live-action musical film to join the billion dollar club.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ is currently playing in cinemas.
