Johnny Depp has been in the headlines a lot this year for all the wrong reasons, whether it be the legal matters pervading his private life or the spectacular Futterwacken-flop that was ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’, but today comes a bit of unexpected news concerning the enigmatic actor.

Per Deadline, Depp has landed a co-starring role in the sequel to this year’s ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ alongside Eddie Redmayne. Little else is known about his role at this point, but it is a noteworthy piece of casting as it firmly places Depp at the head of another blockbuster franchise at a time when his star power has taken a hit. It will be interesting to see if this heralds a comeback for the actor, who has a number of other projects in the pipeline, including a return as Captain Jack Sparrow in next year’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’.

Whatever the case, his inclusion in the wizarding world is an unusual casting choice, considering his recent roles of playing eccentric, ‘wacky’ caricatures. Hopefully he will give a performance that fits the established style of the ‘Harry Potter’ universe.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ apparates into theatres November 18, with its sequel to follow two years later on November 16, 2018.
