Disney’s been making all the headlines lately when it comes to live-action re-imaginings of its classic animated hits but, with the success of ‘The Jungle Book’ earlier this year, it’s to be expected that other studios want a slice of the lucrative pie too. Enter Sony, who are not only making a rival adaptation to Disney’s live-action ‘Mulan’ a la Warner Bros’ forever in production ‘Jungle Book’, but have also tapped a director well ahead of Disney. And it’s quite the pick.
According to Deadline, Alex Graves will helm the project. Graves has previously won acclaim for his fantastic season 4 work on ‘Game of Thrones’, including that season’s finale ‘The Children’, easily one of the most cinematic of the entire series. As a fan, I can’t help but love this choice. While with these projects it’s usually the Disney versions that get me the most excited, the choice of director alone has propelled my expectations for Sony’s vision well beyond that of the Mouse House’s. If they can get a great script, I have confidence they might make something great here. Only time will tell.
Interestingly, Deadline notes that this version of the ‘Mulan’ tale ‘is being designed for the international marketplace’ in contrast to Disney’s, in order to set the two apart. Perhaps this is a clue that they are aiming specifically to tap into the booming Chinese market, which ‘Warcraft’ found great success with this summer. Again we’ll have to wait and see what exactly this means.
