TOP STORY OF THE WEEK:
WARNER BROS. AND DC MOVE FORWARD WITH ‘DARK UNIVERSE’
Despite the critical response to both ‘Batman v Superman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ (even though we actually enjoyed the latter with a solid B grade), both films have been successful at the box office having grossed $872 million and $635 million worldwide respectively (with the latter still in theatres and continues to grow). Now, Variety broke the news that Warner Bros. and DC are moving forward with ‘Justice League Dark‘, although they are renaming it as ‘Dark Universe’ (which I actually like the new title more), which the renaming was probably decided so they wouldn’t confuse general audiences that happened to think that this was the sequel to next year’s ‘Justice League’ which it isn’t, it is its own thing. Doug Liman (‘Edge of Tomorrow’) will direct the feature, while Michael Gilio is writing the film’s screenplay. Warner Bros. hasn’t officially revealed this film, and there is no word if this film will be set in the DC Extended Universe.
‘ANGRY BIRDS’ SEQUEL FLIES HIGH AT ROVIO AND SONY
‘The Angry Birds Movie’ has been a success at the box office this year, grossing $346 million globally on a reported budget of just $73 million. Variety reports that ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ sequel is in the works at Rovio Entertainment and Sony, although no word on when the sequel will be released in theatres. While we didn’t particularly enjoyed the first film as it recieved a C- grade, audiences however have found the film to be entertaining with a B+ CinemaScore. Although, the film is the second highest grossing video-game adaptation worldwide, behind only this year’s ‘Warcraft’.
‘JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH’ GETS THE REMAKE TREATMENT
While I don’t usually include news that a star or director is in early talks to join a movie project, the reason this is on this week’s news report is that Deadline broke the news that Disney is in development on a live-action ‘James and the Giant Peach’, based upon the popular Roald Dahl book. Disney has made a ‘James and the Giant Peach’ movie back in 1996 which was mainly a stop-motion animated film, although it had elements of live-action as well. Sam Mendes (‘Skyfall’) is in talks to direct the remake for Disney.
‘COPS’ MOVIE IS IN THE WORKS… AND IT’S THE FOX TV SERIES
This is a bit of a weird news development, but hey we’ve seen weirder (‘Tetris’ trilogy). This week news dropped by Deadline that the reality documentary police series which had a solid run at FOX from 1989 to 2013, and is now currently still on the air over at Spike since 2013, will be adapted into a feature film. When I first read this, I was like “really?”, however when thinking about it, there’s a lot you can do to turn this into a feature film. Although, its been mentioned that the film will have a “buddy comedy” cop vibe with an “edgy narrative” – at this point, is it really an adaptation of the TV series? Ruben Fleischer will direct the film.
