TOP STORY OF THE WEEK:

CHANNING TATUM GETS FINS FOR ‘SPLASH’ REMAKE

Grossing nearly $70 million at the box office back in 1984, ‘Splash’ was a huge success, being noteworthy as the first film distributed by Touchstone Pictures (and the film being one of the reasons for Disney to create this studio). Earlier this year, there was talks about a ‘Splash’ remake with rumors surrounding that it may focus on a merman this time around, compared to a mermaid that the 1984 film was focused upon. Well, it turns out to be completely true as Variety reports that Channing Tatum will play the merman in the ‘Splash’ remake. Although, what’s even more interesting is that the film will be gender swapped as Jillian Bell will play the love interest (similar to Tom Hanks being the love interest in the original film). I’m pretty sure that this film will be similar in terms of setting up this relationship, although it may end up being something original in terms of story, but that’s pure speculation on my part. Whether it turns out more like a reboot, than a remake, I think it is refreshing to see a take on the story with a merman, as under the water tales are usually mermaid focus.

ILLUMINATION BARKS FOR MORE ‘SECRET LIFE OF PETS’

Universal and Illumination Entertainment announce that a sequel to ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ is in the works for a July 13th, 2018 release, which is surprising that the sequel is coming sooner than expected (that’s less than two years away now). ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ getting a sequel is a real no-brainier having grossed over $319 million in the USA and just over $500 million globally, so far. Currently, the first film that was released last month sits as the seventh highest grossing film in the USA, and the third highest in terms of Summer grosses. This is Illumination Entertainment’s second franchise starter, which the first belongs to their highly popular ‘Despicable Me’ series.

WARNER BROS. CONJURES A ‘FANTASTIC BEASTS’ SEQUEL

This week can be dubbed as sequel week as Warner Bros. announces a sequel to the upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movie – which is set for release this November. The sequel to ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is scheduled for a November 16th, 2018 release with J.K. Rowling returning to pen the screenplay, along with David Yates directing – who has had experience directing the last four ‘Harry Potter’ films, along with ‘Fantastic Beasts’ this year.

DAISY RIDLEY JOINS YOUNG ADULT NOVEL ADAPTATION

With ‘The Hunger Games’ series now finished and ‘Divergent’ finishing up on television. Lionsgate looks to another young adult potential franchise. Variety reports that Lionsgate will produce ‘Chaos Walking’. The novel was written by author Patrick Ness. Daisy Ridley (‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’) will star in the film as the lead role with Doug Liman (‘Edge of Tomorrow’) attached to direct the adaptation.

‘AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR’ IS NOW ONLY ONE TITLE

Back in October 2014 Marvel Studios revealed the entire slate of phase 3 films (which later led to release date shuffles, films getting added like ‘Ant-Man’ sequel and ‘Spider-Man’ joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ‘Inhumans’ now looking less likely). One of the big announcements was that the third ‘Avengers’ film will be released in two parts titled as ‘Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2’. While speaking with Uproxx in May after the release of ‘Captain America: Civil War’, the Russo Brothers (who are attached to direct the third ‘Avengers’ film) stated that they will change the titles as they were “misleading”. Well this week, Marvel Studios officially re-titled the films, although while the first part is still titled as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, the second part has been renamed as ‘Untitled Avengers’, for now that is. Because the title announcement was expecting and that the second part being renamed to just ‘Untitled Avengers’ is the reason why it is on the bottom of this week’s news report.
