‘Crimson Peak’ is from director Guillermo del Toro and stars Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.
‘Crimson Peak’ tells the story of Edith Cushing, the mayor’s daughter, who has a desire of becoming a writer, but when businessman Sir Thomas Sharpe pitches an invention to finance, he soon has his heart set on Edith.
‘Crimson Peak’ is being polarized by mixed reviews, people either like it or don’t, and while ‘Crimson Peak’ does provide a creepy tone, its scares aren’t inventive, despite some impressive visual effects.
The film is less of a horror, and more of a romance thriller, deceived by the film’s marketing. However, it isn’t until the film’s final fifteen minutes, when it actually starts to be frightening and acts like a horror film, but by then, you are mostly checked out, and wish the last fifteen minutes was like that for the overall picture.
However, there are elements that are quite effective and inventive, however thanks to an uneven story and tone, the moments of brilliance is small, e.g. the ghosts, and at times the film feels rushed, e.g. the romance between Edith and Thomas.
For those who want to check it out, give it a look, but overall ‘Crimson Peak’ was a bit of a disappointment.
“Beware of Crimson Peak”.
